In 1677, poet, libertine, and sometime spy for Charles II, Aphra Behn was the first published professional female playwright in the English language. Her play The Rover, or the Banish’d Cavaliers was wildly popular in the Court, but Behn was dismissed as lewd by critics due to her frank depiction of female sexual longing. The Hidden Room presents this rarely-performed delight as a mash-up of 1677 and 1983 - a Restoration/New Romantic proto-feminist sex romp, complete with swashbuckling sword fights, forbidden romance, masked revelers, and bitchen live music.
This inspired evening of storytelling, knowledge sharing, and awakening will feature multi-media presentations by local artists and changemakers, including Austin-based filmmaker, Kate Kirby, Executive Director of Kindred Planet Productions, and Director of feature documentary film, Elephant Keeper, and Art Spark Texas staff.
As February is the month of love, the Speaking Advocates will share stories of first love -- be it an unrequited crush, love at first sight, a case of high school sweethearts, however you interpret the theme.
Local non-profit, Friends with Benefits and the Greater Denton Arts Council have teamed up for a very special art exhibition, Open HeARTS, benefiting the Denton State School, showcasing artistic talents of individuals with disabilities.
